Boogeyman
Background Information: Boogeyman [Top] Boogeyman is a 2005 horror / thriller film, directed by Stephen T Kay. The film is a take on the classic boogeyman, or monster in the closet. Boogeyman is USA / New Zealand production. // On the surface, Tim Jensen seems to be a normal person, with a steady job & a good relationship with his girlfriend Jessica. However, a terrifying event that he witnessed as a child has left him traumatized, where his father was killed by the boogeyman that lived in his closet. Since then, he has taken precautions to ensure that the boogeyman cannot get to him. After a Thanksgiving trip with Jessica to her parents house, Tim learns that his mother, Mary, has died. He is forced to return to his childhood home; a Victorian-era house in the country. After dealing with the funeral, he visits the psychiatric ward where he lived after the death of his father. His former counselor advises him to spend a night at the house to finally overcome his fear. Tim reluctantly returns to the house to confront his demons.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] Since movies began, thrillers have depended on a door just slightly ajar, with a narrow slit of darkness that promises to hold your worst fears. In the first five minutes of Boogeyman, a young boys father is violently sucked into a closet, scarring the boy so badly that he grows up to be blank-faced Barry Watson, who plays Tim, an editor at a newspaper. Tim, to impress his girlfriends parents, wears a coat & tie but doesnt shave his sexy stubble. A premonition of his mothers death drives him back to his childhood home so he can exorcise his phobias. From there...well, theres lots of atmospheric cinematography, regular jolts of loud music, & many quick edits. What actually happens is pretty obscure and, really, not worth unobscuring. The obsession with doors & doorknobs verges on the avant-garde. Also featuring a brief glimpse of Lucy Lawless, wearing some truly terrible old-age makeup.
