Consumer DVD Review [Top] Now I didn't particularly care for the movie, as it seemed to revel a bit too much in its own despair for my liking. There were some good set pieces & a stunning soundtrack, but careful reflection & watching the DVD hasn't raised it much in my estimation. But... The DVD is actually something rather special.
In case you don't know the film sees the Firefly clan from House of 1000 Corpses back for another misanthropic adventure. Less a horror movie, more an homage to revenge flicks, The WIld Bunch & Deliverance than anything else, this sees the remnants of the clan on the run from Sheriff Wydell. They take some hostages on the way, they continue their murderous rampage while being tracked by Wydell, who is hellbent on avenging the death of his brother. But the feature packed second DVD is essential viewing even for someone as unconvinced by the film as I was. Best of all is 30 Days In Hell: The Making of The Devil's Rejects which clocks in at a massive 2 hrs 25 mins, & is a fascinating insight into Rob Zombies world of film making. It's a blow-by-blow, detailed account of everything that went into the production including pre-production meetings, auditions, script readings & has contributions from most of the cast & crew. The rest of the extras are more standard fare, but for your buck, you get; Blooper Reel Deleted Scenes 'The Morris Green Show' Buck Owens' video: 'Satan's Got To Get Along Without Me' Captain Spaulding's Xmas Commercial Otis' Home Movie Make-up Test Matthew McGrory Tribute 'Mary The Monkey Girl' Commercial 'Bloody Stand-Up' Video Stills Gallery Theatrical Trailer There are two excellent commentaries for the film - the first is by writer/director Rob Zombie, who doesn;t hold back on the trials & tribulations of the movie business, the second is from cast members, Sid Haig, Bill Mosley & Sheri Moon Zombie. Both add to the film, unlike so many mundane commentaries which have you reaching for the off button. This is an excellent example of how to use the DVD format to its best advantage. If you liked the film, you're going to love this, if you were unsure about the film, it's still worth a look see.
