Dawn Of The Dead
Background Information: Dawn Of The Dead [Top] Dawn of the Dead is a revisioning of George Romero s 1978 original. James Gunn wrote the screenplay, an adaptation of George A Romeros original. In addition to Romeros films Dawn of the Dead also draws influence from the film 28 Days Later with its use of fast intelligent undead in place of the traditional slow lumbering zombies. The film was directed by Zack Snyder. When theres no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth. The plot is relatively simple - for an unexplained reason, the dead have begun coming back to life as the undead after being bitten & killed by the living dead. Ana, who is played by Sarah Polley, goes home from work at the hospital one night & wakes up the next morning to find her suburban Milwaukee town in ruins around her. Her husband is attacked by a young girl from the neighborhood & Ana is forced to flee in her car. After crashing the car, she meets up with Police Officer Kenneth, played by Ving Rhames & they meet other survivors who decide to cross through a mall on their way to what they have heard is a safe town.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] Are you ready to get down with the sickness? Movie logic dictates that you shouldnt remake a classic, but Zack Snyders Dawn of the Dead defies that logic & comes up a winner. You could argue that George A. Romeros 1978 original was sacred ground for horror buffs, but it was a low-budget classic, & Snyders action-packed upgrade benefits from the same manic pacing that energized Romeros continuing zombie saga. Romeros indictment of mega-mall commercialism is lost , so Snyder & screenwriter James Gunn compensate with the same setting, in this case, a Milwaukee shopping mall under siege by cannibalistic zombies in the wake of a devastating viral outbreak, a well-chosen cast , some outrageously morbid humor, & a no-frills plot that keeps tension high & blood splattering by the bucketful. Horror buffs will catch plenty of tributes to Romeros film , & shocking images are abundant enough to qualify this Dawn as an excellent zombie-flick double-feature with 28 Days Later, its de facto British counterpart. ,
Biography: Sarah Polley [Top] Sarah Polley is a Canadian actor & producer. She has starred in a number of films including Atom Egoyan s The Sweet Hereafter. She first became well-known at age fourteen as the star of the popular CBC television series Road to Avonlea. Long outspoken, she quit the show when it was picked up by Disney s family channel for fear of Americanization. She turned more of her energies to left-wing politics, becoming a prominent member of the New Democratic Party, where maverick Ontario legislator Peter Kormos was said to be her political mentor. In 1995 when protesting against the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario government of Mike Harris, riot police knocked out her front teeth. Not wanting to be seen to be stealing the spotlight, by virtue of her profile, from other activists, she later scaled back on her political activism, but remains one of the most engaged young actors in North America. After this incident she returned to acting & her role in the The Sweet Hereafter first brought her considerable attention in the United States.
