Cliff Richard - In The Beginning
Background Information: Cliff Richard [Top] Sir Cliff Richard is the stage name of one of the UK s most popular singers of all time. Cliff Richard was one of the founding members of The Drifters, who later changed their name to Cliff Richard & the Drifters & then Cliff Richard & the Shadows. Cliff was a guitarist & lead singer in the band. It was suggested to the group that they put a name out in front of the groups title, as this was the common thing at the time & hence Cliff Richard & the Drifters came about. The group gained a contract & went into Abbey Road Studios to record their first record in 1958. They were given a non-rocking number called Schoolboy Crush to record, but were allowed to record one of their own for the B-side. This was Move It, written by Ian Sammy Samwell, who was the first new member of the group. There are a number of stories about why the A-side song was replaced by the B-side. One of these stories says that their producer Norrie Paramor, played the record to his daughter & she raved about the B-side song instead of the A-side. Consumer DVD Review [Top] I ordered Cliff Richard - In The Beginning with great expectations. Unfortunately I found it to be a confusingly directed cook-up full of mistakes. As the story of Cliff & The Shadows is already very well known & there is no lack of facts or film material etc. one could expect something better by 2006. I am left with the feeling that the makers did not have very much knowledge on the subject & did not care. If you want to throw in details like here there should be more time.
It is sad that the interviews of those who had really something to tell got kinda wasted here. The only reason for giving two stars is the effort of those those people & the TV appearances like Move It From 1960 thatI had not seen before - unfortunately there was not so much to see because the very short clips made the result even more irritating. So maybe one day we will see a good documentary on subject not to bee overlooked. I don't like to knock down artistic efforts but I do not see any reason to keep this one in my collection.
