Background Information: Ray Charles
[Top]
Ray Charles was a pioneering pianist & soul singer whom Frank Sinatra called the only genius in the business. He helped shape the sound of rhythm & blues & brought a soulful sound to everything from country music to pop standards to a now-iconic rendition of America the Beautiful. He was born Ray Charles Robinson in Albany, Georgia, shortening his name when he entered show business to avoid confusion with boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. Charles began going blind at around age five & was totally blind by age seven. He said that the causes were undiagnosed, but many believe it was as a result of glaucoma. Just before his eyes began to fail, he had seen his younger brother, George, drown in a washtub. He attended school at the St. Augustine School for the Deaf & the Blind in St. Augustine, Florida as a charity case; he learned how to read Braille, as well as to write music & play various instruments. While he was there, his mother, who had raised him, died. After leaving school, Charles began working as a musician in Florida, eventually moving to Seattle, Washington in 1947. Biography: Paul McCartney
[Top]
Sir James Paul McCartney, MBE, better known as Paul McCartney, is a British musician, composer & producer. He was born at Walton Hospital, located in northern Liverpool near his teenage home, where his mother had worked as a nurse. His father was a professional trumpet player & gave the young Paul a vital early grounding in music. The early death of his mother Mary from breast cancer when he was fourteen was a formative influence on his life & created an additional bond between him & John Lennon, whose mother had also died prematurely. McCartney first rose to fame as the bassist, pianist, guitarist, singer & songwriter for the Beatles. He was initially invited to join John Lennons band the Quarrymen as a guitarist, but he eventually took over bass guitar duties in the early Sixties, after the groups formative stint at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, replacing original bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, who remained in Hamburg when the rest of the group returned to Liverpool.
