Background Information: Gladiator

Gladiator was a popular movie that appeared in 2000, directed by Ridley Scott & starring Russell Crowe & Joaquin Phoenix. The protagonist of the movie is a Roman general turned gladiator named Maximus Decimus Meridius whose family was killed on orders from the Emperor Commodus & is now eager to seek revenge. Best Picture, Best Actor, Visual Effects, Costume Design & Sound. It was nominated for seven more, including Best Supporting Actor & Best Director. The Roman emperors in the movie are loosely based on Marcus Aurelius, who ruled 161 – 180 & his son, the deranged Commodus, who ruled between 180 – 192 AD & who scandalized Roman society by appearing in the Colosseum as a gladiator. The films characterization accurately reflects Marcus Aureliuss reputation for wisdom, but its representation of Commodus is extremely watered down, as Commodus was far more insane & bloodthirsty than he appears in the film. I knew there was a reason why I never got around to buying the two disc edition, & now I know: I was waiting for this three-disc edition. I just didnt know what I was waiting for.

It was really interesting to see the new scenes, even though I understand why Ridley Scott cut them out of the big screen version. The film works very well without them - obviously, who didnt love it when they saw it on the big screen? - but if youre a Gladiator fan, you want to see it all. Love the Ridley/Crowe commentary as well. Oh, just go ahead, you wont regret buying this DVD. I promise.
