Agatha Christies Marple
Consumer DVD Review [Top] I'm not going to dispute the previous reviewer's statement that Margaret Rutherford was truely great as Miss Marple in her four film outings, but they bore little relation to the Marple of the books. However, how anyone can suggest that the sublime Joan Hickson is 'wooden' or 'miscast' in the superb BBC adaptations is beyond me. She was absolutely perfect - as were the adaptations; faithful, but with plenty of wry, witty humour added.
The recent ITV versions are beyond dreadful. Ridiculous plot changes simply to titilate, a complete change of character for Miss Marple , EVERY role utterly miscast & the most hammy performances imaginable outside of a pantomime. There is nothing, literally NOTHING to recommend these travesties. I'm only relieved that feeble viewing figures will surely guarantee no more epsidoes for the future. Biography: Derek Jacobi [Top] Sir Derek George Jacobi is a British actor, knighted in 1994 for his services to the theatre. Jacobi was born in Leytonstone in east London ; he studied at the University of Cambridge before embarking on his stage career. He quickly came to the fore & his talent was recognised by Laurence Olivier, who gave him the role of Cassio in his 1965 film of Othello. Although Jacobis name was becoming known & he was increasingly busy with stage & screen acting, his big breakthrough did not come for another ten years. It was the title role of the BBC s blockbuster series I, Claudius that finally cemented his popular reputation. His performance as the stammering, twitching Emperor Claudius won him many plaudits. It was a performance he would later come close to repeating in the role of Alan Turing in the stage play, Breaking the Code. Jacobi continued to play Shakespeare, notably in Kenneth Branagh s 1989 film of Henry V & in two notable productions of Hamlet, but also attracted new audiences as the detective-monk Cadfael in ITV s adaptation of the novels of Ellis Peters.
