Brannigan
Background Information: Brannigan [Top] Brannigan is a 1975 film set in London starring John Wayne & Richard Attenborough, directed by Douglas Hickox. It tells the story of a Chicago detective sent to England to organise the extradition of an American mobster. After turning down the role of Dirty Harry & seeing the subsequent success of the film John Wayne made two gritty police thrillers in quick succession. After McQ he ventured over the Atlantic to make a fish out of water film in the same vein as Clint Eastwoods Coogans Bluff. Tough Chicago cop, Jim Brannigan, is sent to London to extradite notorious American gangster, Ben Larkin, but before he can collect him, Larkin is kidnapped & Brannigan spends the rest of the film chasing around London in search of his quarry. Whilst struggling to adapt to the British way of life & the restrained style of policing, he employs techniques not usually seen outside Chicago. In the meantime, a contract has been put out on Brannigans life by Larkin to prevent him from being extradited. Although Wayne goes along with is classic screen persona & Sir Richard Athenborough gives a solid performance in a suporting role, Wayne is too old to be convincing in this film, specially working with a young actress who plays her brithish escort cop & who develops a crush for the 60 year old man! Competent in all departments...except for the fact that it should have been played by a younger actor...the film seemed to point the obvious end of Wayne carrer....fortunatly he said farewell with the classic The Shottist! The dvd presents the film in is original aspect ratio of 2:35 & a clear mono sound, plus a trailer. For John Wayne fans only! Biography: John Wayne [Top] John Wayne, nicknamed Duke, was an American film actor whose career spanned the evolutionary phase of American cinema, appearing in silent movies & talkies alike. He remains, by many accounts, the most popular star in the history of American film. He was born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa, but the name became Marion Michael Morrison when his parents decided to name their next son Robert. His family moved to Glendale, California in 1911 ; it was neighbors in Glendale who started calling him Big Duke, because he never went anywhere without his Airedale dog, who was Little Duke. He preferred Duke to Marion & the name stuck for the rest of his life. After nearly gaining admission to the US Naval Academy, he attended the University of Southern California, where he also played on the football team under legendary coach Howard Jones. An injury while swimming at the beach curtailed his athletic career, however; Wayne would later note that he was too terrified of Jones reaction to reveal the actual cause of his injury.
