Background Information: Al Di Meola [Top] Al Di Meola is a Latin jazz fusion guitarist, known, among other things, for his incredible technique & the discipline with which he plays. Di Meola was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1971, he enrolled in the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1974 he joined Chick Corea s band, Return to Forever & played with the band until a major lineup shift in 1976. Di Meola went on to explore a variety of styles, but is most noted for his Latin-influenced jazz fusion works. He is a four time winner as Best Jazz Guitarist in Guitar Player Magazines Reader Poll. In addition to a prolific solo career, he has engaged in successful collaborations with bassist Stanley Clarke, synthesizer player Jan Hammer, violinist Jean-Luc Ponty & guitarists John McLaughlin & Paco de LucĂa. In the beginning of his career Di Meola was noted for his technical mastery & extremely fast, complex guitar solos & compositions, although even on his early albums, he had begun to explore Mediterranean cultures & acoustic genres like flamenco. Background Information: Stanley Clarke [Top] Stanley Clarke is a virtuosic American musician known for his work on double bass & bass guitar. Clarke was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Having graduated from the Philadelphia Academy of Music, he moved to New York City in 1971 & began working with famous bandleaders & musicians including Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Pharoah Sanders, Gil Evans, Stan Getz & Al Di Meola. During this period he formed the Jazz fusion group Return to Forever with pianist Chick Corea which had several successful albums. He also released a number of albums under his own name. He created a very distinctive sound, playing Alembic basses & applying Larry Graham s innovative slap style of bass playing to harmonically complex jazz based music.
