Background Information: The Day After Tomorrow
[Top]
The Day After Tomorrow is an apocalyptic science fiction film written & directed by Roland Emmerich, starring Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal & Sela Ward. The film dramatically but unrealistically depicts catastrophic effects of global warming, boasting high-end special effects as a strong point. Global destruction by three massive global superstorms caused by global warming that results in an ice age for the northern hemisphere. The movie is based on the idea that an ocean current that supplies warm water to the Northern Hemisphere is disrupted by the melting of the polar ice caps. This leads to a severe change in climate for the Earth. At first the predictions are that this will take some six to eight weeks to take effect, but then three massive storms appear across the globe. These combine over the space of a week to form a huge planet-wide storm. The eyes of the storms are able to suck extremely cold air from the upper atmosphere to the ground causing flash freezing to anything caught in it. Posters Of The Day After Tomorrow

Supreme silliness doesnt stop The Day After Tomorrow from being lots of fun for connoisseurs of epic-scale disaster flicks. After the blockbuster profits of Independence Day & Godzilla, you cant blame director Roland Emmerich for using global warming as a politically correct excuse for destroying most of the northern hemisphere. Like most of Emmerichs films, this one emphasises special effects over such lesser priorities as well-drawn characters & plausible plotting, & his dialogue is so laughably trite that it could be entirely eliminated without harming the movie. Its the spectacle thats important here, not the lame, recycled plot about father & son who endure an end-of-the-world scenario caused by the effects of global warming. So sit back, relax & enjoy the awesome visions of tornado-ravaged Los Angeles, blizzards in New Delhi, Japan pummelled by grapefruit-sized hailstones, & Manhattan flooded by swelling oceans & then frozen by the onset of a modern ice age. Its all wildly impressive, & Emmerich obviously doesnt care if the science is flimsy, so why should you? ,
