Background Information: A Face In The Crowd
[Top]
A Face in the Crowd is a crticially-acclaimed film from controvesial director Elia Kazan. It is the story of Lonesome Rhoads, a country comedian portrayed by Andy Griffith, who has a public persona of a generous & warm buffoon but who off-stage is a cruel & manipulative near- psychopath. Some have suggested that the Rhoads character may have been inspired in part by John Henry Faulk, a county comedian who was long blacklisted as a result of the Red Scare.
Biography: Elia Kazan

Elia Kazan was a Greek -born American film & theatre director. He was born Elia Kazanjoglou in Istanbul in 1909 to Greek parents. He became one of the most visible members of the Hollywood elite. His remarkable theater credits included directing The Glass Menagerie & A Streetcar Named Desire, the two plays that made Tennessee Williams a theatrical & literary force & All My Sons & Death of a Salesman the plays which did much the same for Arthur Miller. His history as a film director is scarcely less noteworthy. He won two Academy Awards for Best Director, for Gentlemans Agreement & On the Waterfront. He elicited remarkable performances from actors such as Vivien Leigh & Marlon Brando in the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire, James Dean in East of Eden & Andy Griffith in A Face In The Crowd. His later career was clouded, however, by the fact that he was one of the few Hollywood luminaries who named names before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the postwar Red Scare, which was spearheaded by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Biography: Walter Matthau
[Top]
Walter Matthau was an American comedy actor possibly best known for his role as the gruff & less tidy member of The Odd Couple. Matthau was born in New York & served with the Army Air Corps during World War II. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant & became interested in acting. He often joked that his best early review came in a play he did where he posed as a derelict. One reviewer said The others just looked like actors in make-up, Walter Matthau really looks like a skid row bum! Matthau was a respected stage actor for years in such fare as Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? & A Shot In The Dark. In 1955, he made his film debut as a whip-wielding bad guy in The Kentuckian opposite Kirk Douglas. He appeared in many films after this as a villain such as the 1958 King Creole. That same year he made a Western called Ride A Crooked Trail with Audie Murphy, the most decorated hero of World War II. Mister Matthau also directed a low budget 1960 film called The Gangster Story. In 1962, Matthau won acclaim as a sympathetic sheriff in Lonely Are The Brave. Posters Of The Survivors
