City of God is a Brazilian film, released in its home country in 2002 & worldwide in 2003. It was adapted by Bráulio Mantovani from the novel by Paulo Lins. It was directed by Kátia Lund & Fernando Meirelles. It stars Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino da Hora, Jonathan Haagensen & Douglas Silva. Most of the actors in the film had never acted before & were, in fact, residents of favelas such as Vidigal & the Cidade de Deus itself. Best Cinematography, Best Directing, Best Editing & Best Writing. Before that, in 2003 it had been chosen to be Brazils runner for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but it was not nominated to be one of the five finalists. In September 2004, a nine-part spin-off series, City of Men, was released on DVD & broadcast on BBC4.one man will do anything to tell the world everything. Taking place over the course of a few decades, City of God tells the story of two parallel lives from the favela Cidade de Deus in Brazil. Hero is a film first released in China on October 24, 2002. It was both the most expensive & the highest-grossing motion picture in Chinese cinema history. It hit US theaters on August 27, 2004 despite the fact that the Asian DVD had already been available for over a year. It became the top-grossing film in the first week of its US debut, at US$18M & continued to lead the US box office in its second week at US$11,5M. It fell to the 4th place in its third week at US$4,4M. It set a record as the highest-grossing opening-weekend foreign language film in the United States. The US edition of the DVD, with Mandarin, English & French sound track, was released on November 30, 2004. Hero is a movie of the wuxia genre, directed by Zhang Yimou. It stars Jet Li as the nameless hero. A team of assassins are played by Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Donnie Yen & Zhang Ziyi. Chen Daoming plays their intended target, the King of Qin. Jet Li is a martial artist & film actor. He won the Chinese Wushu national championship five times, which eventually led to a career as a martial arts movie star, first in mainland China, then in Hong Kong & now in Hollywood. He has made many movies in Hong Kong over the years. His debut in Hollywood was in Lethal Weapon 4 as a villain. His first leading role in a Hollywood movie was in Romeo Must Die. After that came Kiss of the Dragon, The One premièred in North America on November 2, 2001 & Cradle 2 the Grave premièred in North America on February 28, 2003. His latest movie to premiere in North America is Hero. the Shaolin Temple series - the films that introduced him; the Once Upon a Time in China series, about the semi-legendary Chinese folk hero; Fist of Legend, which, contrary to popular belief, was not a remake of Bruce Lee s The Big Boss, but rather of Bruce Lees Chinese Connection ; & the Fong Sai Yuk films, about another Chinese folk hero.
