It was made into a film by the Disney corporation. The original version was released in 1975, directed by John Hough. A remake directed by Peter Rader was released in 1995. The story is about two orphans, a sister & brother, who have paranormal abilities. They are adopted by a millionaire who plans to use their abilities to his own purposes. The children escape, learn that they are actually of extraterrestrial origin & in the end find their way to their own people. A sequel was made in 1978, titled Return from Witch Mountain, starring Bette Davis & Christopher Lee.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] The effects are low-tech & no longer special, but Escape to Witch Mountain still has plenty of Disney live-action charm. Its rather quaint by later standards, coming just two years before Star Wars upped the ante on movie magic, but the storys got timeless appeal as a precursor to Harry Potters more lavish brand of kid-wizardry. Here youve got Tony & sister Tia , orphans unaware of their mysterious past, who are taken in by a nefarious liar seeking to exploit their supernatural powers. Populated by 70s stalwarts like Donald Pleasance & Eddie Albert , this lightweight Disney fare is perfect for kids under 10, with such enticements as a clever cat mascot named Winky , Tonys magical harmonica... & a Winnebago that flies! With a sci-fi climax, this popular hocus-pocus spawned a 1978 sequel that proved similarly popular with kids. ,
