Background Information: Fight Club
[Top]
Fight Club is the first published novel by Chuck Palahniuk, in which an unnamed protagonist struggles with the commercialization of American culture & male disenfranchisement & attempts to overcome them through fighting. It was made into a movie of the same name in 1999 directed by David Fincher. A reissued version of the novel was published in 2004 that begins with an introduction by the author which talks about the conception & popularity of both the novel & the movie. As of June 23, 2004 Fight Club is in development as a musical, developed by Palahniuk, Fincher & Trent Reznor. When Palahniuk made his first attempt at publishing a novel publishers rejected it for being too disturbing. This led him to work on Fight Club, which he wrote as an attempt to disturb the publisher even more for rejecting him. Palahniuk wrote this story in between working while on the job for Freightliner. After initially publishing it as a short story in the compilation Pursuit of Happiness, Palahniuk expanded it into a full novel, which, contrary to what he expected, the publisher was willing to publish. All films require a certain suspension of disbelief, Fight Club perhaps more than others; but if youre willing to let yourself get caught up in the anarchy, this film, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is a modern-day morality play warning of the decay of society. Edward Norton is the unnamed protagonist, a man going through life on cruise control, feeling nothing. To fill his hours, he begins attending support groups & 12-step meetings. True, he isnt actually afflicted with the problems, but he finds solace in the groups. This is destroyed, however, when he meets Marla , also faking her way through groups. Spiralling back into insomnia, Norton finds his life is changed once again, by a chance encounter with Tyler Durden , whose forthright style & no-nonsense way of taking what he wants appeal to our narrator. Tyler & the protagonist find a new way to feel release: they fight. They fight each other, & then as others are attracted to their ways, they fight the men who come to join their newly formed Fight Club. Marla begins a destructive affair with Tyler, & things fly out of control, as Fight Club is transformed into a nationwide fascist group.

The depiction of violence in Fight Club is unflinching, but director David Finchers film is captivating & beautifully shot, with camerawork & effects that are almost as startling as the script. The movie is packed with provocative ideas & images, from the satirical look at the emptiness of modern consumerism to quasi-Nietzschean concepts of beyond good & evil, that will leave the viewer with much food for thought to take away. Pitt & Norton are an unbeatable duo, & the film has a great sense of humour too. Even if it leaves you with a sense of profound discomfort this is a movie that youll have to see again & again, if for no other reason than to just to take it all in.

Biography: David Fincher
[Top]
David Fincher is a film director. Born in Denver, Colorado, Fincher started as an animator at Industrial Light & Magic in 1980 & stayed until 1984. In 1986, he founded the video-production company Propaganda Films. He directed big-budget videos for artists such as Madonna, George Michael, Aerosmith & the Rolling Stones, as well as commercials. Like a number of other video directors, including Julien Temple, Russell Mulcahy & Spike Jonze, he then moved into film. His debut was Alien³, which was then the most expensive picture by a first-time director, but was a financial & critical disappointment. Despite this initial failure, Finchers career rebounded with his next film, the dark thriller Se7en. This film, along with the complex & controversial Fight Club has put Fincher in the forefront of his post-video director contemporaries. Even Finchers more conventional work, such as The Game & Panic Room contains his distinctive dark photography with innovative uses of computer graphics. Posters Of Panic Room
