House of Sand & Fog is a 2003 movie adapted by Vadim Perelman & Shawn Otto from the novel by Andre Dubus III. It was directed by Vadim Perelman in his first directorial outing. The movie stars Jennifer Connelly, Ben Kingsley & Shohreh Aghdashloo. An Iranian immigrant buys a house at auction, which puts him in conflict with the houses previous owner. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, for Best Original Score, Best Actor & Best Supporting Actress. House of Sand & Fog at the Internet Movie Database. In an effort to help her, Lester loses sight of his professionalism & the situation becomes increasingly ugly as the Behranis are threatened & Kathy starts to lose a grip of her sanity.
The three main characters are all played with such skill & sensitivity that it is impossible to take sides or judge who is in the right. One can only feel deepest sympathy for all of them & fear for the outcome. This is a very emotional film, certainly not mainstream but well worth watching. Just make sure you have tissues handy.
Sir Ben Kingsley is an English actor of Indian & Russian-Jewish descent. Ben Kingsley was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire. His father, Rahimtulla Pandit Bhanji, was a Kenya -born doctor of Indian descent & his mother, Anna Lyna Mary Bhanji, a fashion model & actress. Kingsley began his acting career on the stage, but moved to movies early. His first film, Fear is the Key in 1972, was not a success, but he later found fame in the starring role of Mahatma Gandhi in the Academy Award winning Gandhi in 1982, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. His fathers ancestors had come from the Indian states of Punjab & Gujarat, the same as Gandhi himself. Although born Hindu, his father later converted to Sikhism. Jennifer Lynn Connelly is an American film actress. Although she has been working in the film industry since she was a teenager, she has only recently received critical acclaim for her work, most notably for Requiem for a Dream & A Beautiful Mind, for which she won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress. Connelly is married to the British actor Paul Bettany, whom she met while working on a film; the couple has a son. She has also a five-year-old son, Kai, from a previous relationship. Connelly grew up in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn near the Brooklyn Bridge, attending St. Anns School, except for four years the family spent living in Woodstock, New York. Her father was in the garment industry & one of his close friends through the trade was an advertising executive. The executive friend suggested Jennifer audition at a modelling agency. At the age of 10, her career started in newspaper & magazine ads, then moved to television commercials.
