Bill Oddie - How To Watch Wildlife - Part 1
Background Information: Bill Oddie [Top] William Edgar Oddie, OBE, MA is a comedy writer & performer, author, composer & musician. A birdwatcher since his childhood in Birmingham, Bill Oddie has now established a reputation for himself as an ornithologist, conservationist & television presenter on wildlife issues. Some of his books are illustrated with his own paintings & drawings. On the BBC programme Who Do You Think You Are? in 2004 Oddie was invited to investigate his family history. The rest of this paragraph is based on the content of that programme. Oddie was raised primarily by his father as his mother was placed into long term psychiatric care suffering with bipolar disorder. His mother had had one miscarriage & then lost another child, a girl, after five days. It appears that Oddies grandmother had prevented his mother from attending to the girl who was crying. Going to see her later, she found her daughter dead. Oddie makes the reasonable speculation that his mother would have felt his grandmother was to blame for the death of her daughter.
Consumer DVD Review [Top] Bill Oddie was a popular face on British TV screens in the 1970s, as one third of the very popular comedy trio, 'The Goodies'. Now he's carved out a career as a wonderfully entertaining & informative wildlife presenter.
His 'How To Watch Wildlife' series continues in the vein of his previous wildlife shows. He shows us a lot of wildlife - from birds to mammals, to all kinds of weird insects & crustacea - in various locations. But what makes these programmes so watchable, is that he doesn't focus so much on the gore & ugliness of nature, but the uplifting beauty of it. The boy's a national treasure.
