The role of Aileen Wuornos was played by South African actress Charlize Theron & her lesbian lover was played by Christina Ricci. The film was written & directed by Patty Jenkins. The film won Theron the Academy Award for Best Actress, Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama & the SAG Award. Based on a true story Monster at the Internet Movie Database.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] Critics have universally praised Charlise Therons performance in Monster & the praise, for once, is astonishingly deserved. The gorgeous star of The Italian Job & The Cider House Rules vanishes into the character of Aileen Wuornos, a real-life serial killer & prostitute who murdered at least seven men in Florida. Monster traces her relationship with a young woman named Selby , which intertwines with Wuornoss murder spree. This remarkable movie finds compassion for Wuornos but unflinchingly faces her brutal crimes; Theron expresses this womans horrific life history without softening her terrifying, dead-eyed stare. This is a gripping, devastating performance, a physical & psychological transformation comparable to Robert DeNiros in Raging Bull. The movies moral & emotional complexity wouldnt succeed without this searing performance, but succeed it does, & it will stick with you for some time afterwards. Those interested in the back story may also want to seek out Nick Broomfields documentaries on Wuornos.
