Background Information: The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy [Top] The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is a science fiction comedy series created by Douglas Adams that debuted as a radio comedy broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1978. Since then it has been adapted to other formats, slowly becoming a multi-media phenomenon over a span of several years. Adaptations have included stage shows ; a series of five books first published between 1979 & 1992, ; a 1981 TV series ; a 1984 computer game ; & three series of three-part comic book adaptations of the first three novels, published by DC Comics between 1993 & 1996. There have also been a series of towels that are considered by some to be canonical, as they include text from the first novel. A Hollywood-funded film version, produced & filmed in the UK, was released in April 2005 & adaptations of the last three books to radio were broadcast from 2004 to 2005. Many of these adaptations, including the novels, the TV series, the computer game & the earliest drafts of the Hollywood films screenplay, were all done by Adams himself & some of the stage shows debuted new material written by Adams. After twenty years stuck in development , The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy has finally been turned into a movie. Following the radio play, TV series, commemorative towel, & books, this latest installment in the sci-fi-comedy franchise is based on the screenplay & detailed notes by Douglas Adams. For those unfamiliar with the story, everyman Arthur Dent wakes up one morning to discover that his house is set to be demolished to make room for a bypass. Little does he know the entire planet Earth is also set to be destroyed for an interplanetary bypass by the Vogons, a hideous & bureaucratic race of aliens realized in the film by Jim Hensons Creature Shop. Whisked off the planet by his best friend, alien-in-disguise Ford Prefect , Dent embarks on a goofy jaunt across the galaxy accompanied by his trusty Hitchhikers Guide, which looks like a really fancy PDA. The guide itself provides some of the funniest bits of the movie, little animated shorts that explain the ludicrous life forms & extraterrestrial phenomena our heroes encounter. Along the way Arthur meets the two-headed party animal/president of the galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox & develops an unrequited crush on fellow earthling Trillian . The creatures & sets are inspired & answer to the sci-fi fans primal need to see lots & lots of cool stuff. Where the story stumbles is in the telling, as books, the Hitchhikers Guide was foremost about goofy & brilliant ideas that raised questions about our place in the universe while getting a laugh. The movie has enough trouble figuring out how to get the characters from one fantastical location to the next that Adamss funniest concepts often feel left in the dust. While the reverence the filmmakers felt toward Adamss legacy is apparent, one wonders what we could have expected had the creator of this science fiction universe lived to see it with his own eyes.
