Background Information: In America

In America is a 2002 film written by Jim Sheridan & his daughters Naomi & Kirsten. It was directed by Jim Sheridan. The movie stars Paddy Considine, Samantha Morton, Sarah Bolger, Emma Bolger & Djimon Hounsou. In the film, an Irish couple emigrate to the United States with their two young girls, Ariel & Christie, to start a new life in another country following the death of the girls brother, Frankie, back in Ireland. The film is narrated by Christie, the elder of the two young girls, though it focuses on the whole familys trials & tribulations & in parts is given something of a fairytale spin derived from the girls perspective. The family are short on money & set up in a rundown apartment building in Hells Kitchen, known locally as the junkies building. Despite their impoverishment, their initial joy of being in America & the closeness of the family, gives them the energy to make the most of what they have. The mother, Sarah, gets a job in Heaven, a local ice-cream parlour, to support the family while Johnny, the girls father, struggles to get work as an actor.

In America stars the incandescent Samantha Morton & Paddy Considine as two young Irish parents who have lost their only son. Trying to run away from their grief, they move to a junkie-infested apartment building in New York City with their two daughters, Christy & Ariel . Though they struggle with meagre jobs & suffocatingly hot weather, a friendship with an artist in an apartment below them becomes a catalyst that allows them to rebuild their family.

In America is splendidly acted throughout, of particular note are the two girls, real-life sisters whose on-screen charisma is clearly a family trait. But its Morton who anchors the movie; her every emotion seems to glow from her skin. The commitment of the actors keeps the movie compelling, despite some dangerously sentimental patches.
