Background Information: Bollywood
[Top]
Bollywood is the informal name given to the popular Mumbai -based film industry in India. Though some purists deplore the name, it seems likely to persist; it even has its own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary. Bollywood is also commonly referred to as Hindi cinema, even though a strong case could be made that the language of the films is actually Hindustani. Songs often use Urdu vocabulary & English is increasingly heard in dialogues & songs. Rich, jet-set Indians these days seem to speak only English as a fashion statement, while a majority of the urban middle-class are educated in english schools & are as much at home speaking it as their mother-tongue. It is not uncommon to find bi-lingual or tri-lingual Indians in the cities & a mixture of English & an Indian language is often the mode of conversation at workplaces; Bollywood films set in this milieu often feature dialogues studded with English words & phrases, even whole sentences.
Background Information: Hollywood

Hollywood is a district of the city of Los Angeles, California, USA. situated northwest of Downtown. Due to its fame & identity as the historical center of movie studios & stars, the word Hollywood is often used colloquially to refer to the American film industry. Today much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as Burbank & the Westside, but significant ancillary industries remain in Hollywood. Several historic Hollywood theaters are used as venues to premiere major theatrical releases & host the Academy Awards. It is a popular destination for nightlife & tourism & home to the Walk of Fame. There is currently no official boundary of Hollywood, but the 2002 secession movement & the current Neighborhood Council boundaries can serve as guides. The is a sign at the north-east corner of Fairfax Avenue & Melrose Avenue indicating that one is entering Hollywood. Generally, Hollywoods southern border follows Melrose Avenue from Vermont Avenue west to Fairfax Avenue.
