Background Information: Babettes Feast [Top] Babettes Feast is an Academy award -winning 1988 Danish movie. Based on a story by Isak Dinesen, who was also the source of the 1985 Academy award winning film Out of Africa, Babettes Feast is the story of Babette a 19th century Parisian political refugee who seeks shelter in a rough Danish coastal town. Philippa & Martina, the elderly daughters of the towns long-dead minister, take Babette in. As revealed in flashback, Philippa & Martina were once beautiful young women, who had given up their chances at romance & fame, taking refuge in religion. Babette holds a secret that may very well allow the older ladies to have a second chance at life. Babettes Feast, released in 1987 won the 1988 Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy awards beating out Asignatura aprobada of Spain, Au revoir les enfants of France, La Famiglia of Italy & Ofelas of Norway. It also won a BAFTA Film Award for Best Film not in the English Language & was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language Film. Babettes Feast was produced by Just Betzer, Bo Christensen & Benni Korzen.
Biography: Gabriel Axel [Top] Gabriel Axel Oscar winning Danish director, actor, writer & producer, best known for writing the screenplay for Babettes Feast & directing it. Born in Denmark, Axel spent most of his childhood in France. Returning to Denmark, he trained as an actor at the Royal Danish Theatre. After some years in Paris, working with the Louis Jouvet theatre ensemble, Axel concentrated his efforts on directing for the theatre, television & film in Denmark. With some 16 feature films to his credits, which received the Grand Prix de la Technique at the Cannes Film Festival in 1967, Axel returned to France where he directed several large projects for television, which brought him a number of distinguished honours. In 1988, Gabriel Axel won an Academy Award for his Danish feature film Babettes Feast, an adaptation of Isak Dinesen s novel of the same name.
