Background Information: Doctor Who [Top] Doctor Who is a British science fiction television series produced by the BBC about a mysterious time-travelling adventurer known only as The Doctor. It is also the title of a 1996 television movie featuring the same character. The programme is a significant part of British popular culture, widely recognised for its creative storytelling, use of innovative music & low-budget special effects. The show has become a cult television favourite on par with Star Trek. It has influenced generations of British genre television writers, many of whom grew up watching the series. Doctor Who ranked third in a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes of the 20th century. The list was produced by the British Film Institute in 2000 & voted on by industry professionals. A new series of Doctor Who television episodes is being produced by the BBC. It is scheduled to broadcast on BBC One in Spring 2005. History of Doctor Who Doctor Who debuted on BBC television on November 23, 1963. The programme was born out of discussions & plans that had been ongoing for a year.
Biography: Christopher Eccleston [Top] Christopher Eccleston is a British stage, television & film actor, best known for his roles in several high profile prestige films & television series. As a child his ambition was to play football for his beloved Manchester United, but he found himself to be a much better actor than he was a footballer & inspired by television dramas such as Boys from the Blackstuff, he took to acting as his profession. He trained at the Central School of Speech & Drama & first came to public attention as Derek Bentley in the 1991 film Let Him Have It, based on true events. However, it was a regular role in the TV series Cracker – culminating in his characters dramatic death in the second series – that made him a recognisable figure in the UK. He appeared in the low-budget Danny Boyle film Shallow Grave in 1994, in which he co-starred with another up-and-coming young British actor by the name of Ewan McGregor.
