The Interpreter
Background Information: The Interpreter [Top] The Interpreter is a 2005 drama / thriller film, directed by Sydney Pollack & starring Nicole Kidman, Sean Penn & Catherine Keener. The film has a complex plot involving a United Nations interpreter, Silvia Broome, who accidentally overhears two people planning to assassinate someone. Sean Penn plays Tobin Keller, the United States Secret Service agent sent to protect her. The presumed target is the President of the Democratic Republic of Matobo, Edmond Zuwanie, who is scheduled to speak before the General Assembly in a desperate attempt to head off prosecution in the International Criminal Court ; his regime has become notorious for a vicious policy of ethnic cleansing. Both the country & leader are fictional, but they appear to be caricatures of Zimbabwe & Robert Mugabe ; the fictional flag used in in the film as well as the fictional history mentioned are very similar to those of Zimbabwe. Posters Of The InterpreterEditorial DVD Review [Top] Director Sydney Pollack delivers megawatt star power, high gloss, & political passion to The Interpreter, his first thriller since The Firm. With Nicole Kidman & Sean Penn delivering smooth, understated performances, the film more closely recalls Pollacks 1975 Robert Redford/Faye Dunaway paranoid thriller Three Days of the Condor, trading conspiratorial politicians for potential assassination in the United Nations General Assembly . Kidman plays a U.N. interpreter who inadvertently overhears hints of a plot to kill the reviled, tyrannical leader of her African homeland; Penn is the Secret Service agent assigned to protect her, or to determine her role in the assassination scenario. By distancing itself from real-life politics, The Interpreter softens its potential impact as a thriller about contemporary globalization & threats to international peace, but the Penn/Kidman personal drama adds a richly human dimension to Pollacks expert handling of the thriller elements of a complex yet easily-followed plot. Indie-film stalwart Catherine Keener shines in her supporting role as Penns sarcastic by sympathetic Secret Service partner.
