Background Information: Speed [Top] Speed is a film directed by Jan de Bont, starring Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock & Dennis Hopper. Written by Graham Yost, the story is about an Los Angeles police officer who has to stop a insane bomber/extortionist who has rigged a bomb on a public transit bus. The bomb has multiple triggers, including one that will detonate if the bus goes slower than 50 mi/h. The cop & a young woman struggle to keep the bus moving at an acceptable speed despite the congested traffic of the city, while local police provide escort, clear traffic, plan the best route for the bus & search for the bomber. One of the movies most famous scenes involved the bus having to jump over a gap in an elevated freeway-to-freeway ramp which was still under construction. That scene, as well as much of the movie, were all filmed on Interstate 105. Cruise Control, which is set on a cruise ship. Only Sandra Bullock returned to reprise her role. The phrase Die hard was first used during the Peninsular war to describe the Middlesex regiment. This was as a result of the action at the battle of Albuera of Colonel Inglis who upon being badly wounded refused to retire from the battle but calmly & repeatedly said Die hard 57th, die hard as he himself lay dying on the field. In British politics the term die hard was later used to describe those members of the House of Lords who, in the crisis caused by the Lords rejection of Lloyd George s Peoples Budget of 1909 refused to accept the dimunition of the upper houses powers in the Parliament Act. It was later used to describe those members of the Conservative Party, including Winston Churchill, who refused to accept any moves towards Indian self-government in the 1930s. Released as a single in 1994, it became her first crossover success. The song was composed by Gretchen Peters. The lyrics tell a story of a womans response to domestic abuse, seen from the point of view of her daughter. The songs music video was somewhat controversial at the time of its release, due to its graphic depiction of domestic violence. In 2005, American Idol contestant Carrie Underwood performed the song several times on the show & released a version on the B-side of her debut single Inside Your Heaven. The song is also used as the introductory music for Sean Hannity s syndicated radio program. The devices convert a person or object into an energy pattern, then beam them to a target, where it is reconverted into matter. The target can either be another transporter or another specified site. The transporter was invented in the early 22nd century by noted scientist Dr Emory Erickson. Transporters were devised by the creators of Star Trek to avoid having to build expensive shuttle sets & film model shots. They were first seen in the pilot episode The Cage. They are one of the most abused & magical technologies of Star Trek — several episodes have had plots based upon transporter malfunctions & in some they have acted as a deus ex machina to solve the problem-of-the-week. A transporter transports objects in real time, accurate to the quantum level. Heisenberg compensators remove uncertainty from the subatomic measurements, making transporter travel feasible. Further technology involved in transportation include a computer pattern buffer to enable a degree of leeway in the process. Background Information: Behind Enemy Lines [Top] Behind Enemy Lines is a 2001 film starring Gene Hackman & Owen Wilson. Tagline. In war there are some lines you should never cross. The film is centred around a massacre in the Bosnian war of 1991-1995. Admiral Leslie Reigarts carrier battle group is in the final stages of a NATO peace keeping deployment when the F/A-18F Super Hornet of Chris Burnett & his pilot is shot down by renegade Serbian forces. The resulting attempts to rescue the downed aviator are complicated by political considerations which are enforced on Reigart by his NATO commanding officer Admiral Piquet In Bosnia, the lone US pilot attempts to evade Serbian troops & a hired Serb sniper. After dodging Serb special forces, mine fields & tanks, he manages to contact the carrier. After retrieving photographic evidence of the massacres, he is rescued in a dramatic helicopter rescue mission. The movie is loosely inspired by the experiences of former United States Air Force captain Scott OGrady, who was shot down on June 2, 1995 over Bosnia. He managed to survive for six days before being rescued.
Biography: Keanu Reeves [Top] Keanu Charles Reeves is a Hollywood film actor. Although currently working in the United States, Reeves is a Canadian citizen & an avid ice hockey player/fan who was his High School teams MVP. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, his first name means cool breeze over the mountains in Hawaiian. His father is Asian American of Chinese & Hawaiian descent & his mother is English. Reeves gained the notice of the critics in 1986 s Rivers Edge, but his first major film role was in 1986, in the hockey movie Youngblood, starring Rob Lowe. Reevess first popularly successful film was Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure, in 1989. Indeed & perhaps unfortunately for Reeves, much of his subsequent portrayal in the press has been influenced by his comically airheaded character Ted in that film. Despite the fact that his acting has frequently been derided as wooden, Reeves has become a major box-office draw & several of his films have become extremely popular. Speed, released in 1994, was a tremendous success for Reeves, surpassed in 1999 by the sci-fi hit The Matrix.
