Background Information: Short Circuit

Short Circuit was a 1986 comedy sci-fi film starring Ally Sheedy & Steve Guttenberg & directed by John Badham. It revolves around an intelligent & sentient robot named Number 5 that is worth $11,000,000 & 17 cents. The robot later takes the name Johnny 5. A sequel, Short Circuit 2, was released in 1988. Number 5 was one of five prototype robots for the millitary at a robotic center called Nova Laboratories. During a storm the five robots are outside the laboratory & lightning strikes Number 5. Somehow, the lighting strike causes the robot to become sentient. It escapes from Nova Laboratories & explores the world. He meets a young women with an affinity for animals who takes a liking to the robot & hides Number 5 when the millitary comes looking for the very expensive run away. The big message of the movie, very loosely, is what qualifies as alive. Number 5 was also a trademark of the company that built the robot, Input Incorporated. Paul Reubens, is an American actor, writer & comedian, best known professionally for his character Pee-wee Herman. In the 1970s, Reubens performed at local comedy clubs & made four guest appearances on The Gong Show. He soon joined the L,A. -based improvisational comedy team The Groundlings for 6 years, working with Bob Mc Clurg, John Paragon, Susan Barnes & Phil Hartman. Reubens wrote sketches & developed his improvisational skills. He also forged a significant friendship & working relationship with Hartman, with whom he developed the Pee-wee Herman character. Pee-wee was an eccentric man-child with a perpetually giddy disposition. Reubens auditioned for Saturday Night Live the season that Eddie Murphy started, but wasnt accepted into the cast. Instead, he started a stage show with the Herman character. Originally, Reubens imbued Pee-wee with a sexuality that was later toned down as the character made the transition from raucous night club to childrens television. His stage show was immortalized by HBO when The Pee-wee Herman Show was aired in 1981.
