Rebel Without a Cause is a 1955 film which tells the story of a rebellious teenager who comes to a new town, meets a girl, defies his parents & faces the local gang. It stars James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, Jim Backus, Ann Doran, Corey Allen, William Hopper, Rochelle Hudson, Dennis Hopper & Edward Platt. The movie was adapted by Irving Shulman & Stewart Stern from the story by Nicholas Ray, who also directed. The Hypnoanalysis of a Criminal Psychopath. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role & Best Writing, Motion Picture Story. Rebel Without a Cause became a movie which spoke to a generation, the teenagers of the early 1950s. Although James Dean had already become a star with the release of East of Eden earlier in the year, this movie solidified his role as the voice of the generation. The film has been deemed culturally significant by the United States Library of Congress & selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Posters Of Rebel Without A Cause
Biography: Nicholas Ray
[Top]
Nicholas Ray was an American film director. Coming out of a radio background, Ray directed his first film, They Live By Night, in 1947. It was released two years later due to the chaotic conditions surrounding Howard Hughes takeover of RKO Studios. Rays most productive & successful period was the 1950s, although his sympathy for societys outsiders & rebels clearly predated the 1960s counterculture. Amongst his films from this period are Rebel Without A Cause, In A Lonely Place, Johnny Guitar & Party Girl. His films frequently feature an outsider who is trying to break into mainstream society. Although best known for his work in the film noir genre, he worked in a number of genres, including western films & social drama. A bisexual & heavy user of drugs & alcohol, Ray found himself increasingly shut out of the Hollywood film industry in the early 1960s. After collapsing on the set of 55 Days at Peking, he would not direct again until the mid- 1970s. Shortly before his death he collaborated on the direction of Lightning Over Water with German director Wim Wenders. Posters Of Rebel Without A Cause
