Background Information: Blackadder
[Top]
Blackadder is a British sitcom made by the BBC. The title does not refer to a specific series, but rather denotes the programmes taken as a whole. The first series was written by Richard Curtis & Rowan Atkinson ; subsequent series were written by Richard Curtis & Ben Elton. The show was produced by John Lloyd & starred Rowan Atkinson as the eponymous protagonist, Edmund Blackadder & Tony Robinson as his sidekick Baldrick. Blackadder came second in a 2004 BBC poll to find Britains Best Sitcom. Four series of six half hour episodes were made, each one set in a different period of British history. The first series was called The Black Adder & was made in 1983 ; this was followed by Blackadder II in 1986, Blackadder the Third in 1987 & finally Blackadder Goes Forth in 1989. Back & Forth was a 30 minute film originally shown in a special cinema at the Millennium Dome during 2000 & later broadcast by Sky & the BBC. A pilot episode was filmed in 1982, but has never been shown on television. It is implied that in each series the Blackadder character is a descendant of the previous one.

Rowan Sebastian Atkinson is a British comedian & actor. He toured with a one-man show, with Angus Deayton as the straight man. The one-man show was filmed for television & is still popular on video. It characterises Atkinsons comedy style, which is tightly planned & scripted, often physically-based comedy - comedy as performance, rather than comedy as observation or discussion, observant of life as many of the routines were. Atkinsons talent for physical comedy has seen him described as the man with the rubber face. In 2003, he was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest people in British comedy. Atkinson studied electrical engineering at Newcastle University then at Oxford, starting his comedy career at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He is married with two children. His major hobby is apparently fast cars, having written for the British magazine Car & owning & racing Aston Martin vehicles. He holds a UK HGV licence.
