Starsky & Hutch is a 2004 American comedy / action film directed by Todd Phillips. The film stars Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson. A spoof remake of the original Starsky & Hutch television series from the 1970s. Two streetwise cops in their 1976 Ford Torino bust criminals with the help of Huggy Bear. Theres an unwritten formula: when a dusty 70s show gets branded cool again, a shoddy & blasphemous remake is quickly shunted out by soulless studios, made hastily & carelessly enough not to miss the boat before Open All Hours gets its comeback. Scooby-Doo did it, and- sorry if you were in the process of wiping this one out of your memory- The Avengers did too. But somehow Starsky And Hutch avoids remake clichés by revelling in the irony goldmine left vacant by the TV show.

Top marks go to the casters for revolving the film around trusted comedy performers rather than straight-faced, perfectly groomed Hollywood big-shots. Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson- who tickled the world together in Zoolander & The Royal Tenembaums- have now perfected the geeky, uptight but loveable goon & laid-back chick magnet. Snoop Dogg has a go at stealing the show in his 15 minutes of screen time as Huggy Bear- a role he seems to have spent his whole life emulating.

Despite the absence of a Wilson writing credit, the script strikes a balance of comedy & wisely simple plot. Its never laugh-out-loud funny but then, with heavy dollops of nostalgia, irony & references to navigate through, its no problem. Those two hours will cruise by like a high-speed Torino.

Ben Stiller is an American comedian, actor & film director. He is possibly best known for his roles in the films Meet the Parents & Theres Something About Mary. Stiller is son of Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara, who are both veteran comedians & actors themselves. He was born in New York, New York on November 30, 1965 & raised with frequent visits from his familys Hollywood friends. Stiller wrote & appeared on Saturday Night Live as a featured performer in 1990. He went on to host & perform in a self-titled comedy sketch show on MTV & then The Ben Stiller Show on the Fox Network in 1992. The show lasted 12 episodes, but is considered by many to be one of the finest sketch comedy vehicles on television. The show also starred his frequent collaborators Andy Dick, Janeane Garofalo & Bob Odenkirk. Stiller directed both Reality Bites & The Cable Guy, to generally mixed reviews. Owen Cunningham Wilson is an American actor known for the diverse roles he has played & his slightly crooked nose. Wilson has co-written three films with director Wes Anderson -- Bottle Rocket, Rushmore & The Royal Tenenbaums & was nominated for an Academy Award in 2001 for Best Original Screenplay for his work with Anderson on The Royal Tenenbaums. Wilsons younger brother, Luke Wilson, is also a well-known actor. Wilsons roles have varied between small, quirky comedy collaborations with Anderson & bigger budget box office fare, including seven movies made with actor Ben Stiller.
