Morituri
Background Information: Morituri [Top] Morituri is a 1965 movie about a German pacifist living in India during the Second World War. He is blackmailed by the allies into using his demolition expertise to cripple a Nazi ship carrying rubber to Japan, in hopes of recovering it. The film stars Marlon Brando, Yul Brynner, Janet Margolin & Trevor Howard. It was directed by Bernhard Wicki. It was nominated for two Oscars in the 39th Academy Awards, for best black-and-white cinematography & best black-and-white costume design.
Biography: Marlon Brando [Top] Marlon Brando was an American actor who brought the techniques of method acting to prominence in the films A Streetcar Named Desire & On the Waterfront, both directed by Elia Kazan in the early 1950s. His acting style, combined with his public persona as an outsider uninterested in the Hollywood of the early 1950s, had a profound effect on a generation of actors, including James Dean & Paul Newman & later stars, including Robert De Niro. Brando was born in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1935 his parents separated & his mother moved with her three children to Santa Ana, California. In 1937 his parents reconciled & the family moved to Libertyville, Illinois, north of Chicago. He was of Dutch, French, English & Irish stock; the original family name was Brandeau. His mother, a kind & talented woman with a drinking problem, was involved in local theater & this first interested him in stage acting. Brando was a gifted mimic from early childhood & developed a rare ability to absorb the tics & mannerisms of people he played & to display those traits dramatically while staying in character.

His mother was Russian & his father was the Swiss-Mongolian consul general to Russia. Brynners best-known role was that of King Mongkut of Siam in both the stage & film versions of the musical The King & I, for which he won an Academy Award as Best Actor. He is one of only seven people who have won both a Tony Award & an Academy Award for the same role. He made an immediate impact upon first starring in films in 1956, appearing not only in The King & I that year, but also in major roles in The Ten Commandments & Anastasia. He later starred in such films as Solomon & Sheba, The Magnificent Seven & Westworld. Brynner died in New York City at the age of either 65 or 70 of lung cancer caused by smoking. In January 1985, nine months before his death, he gave an interview on Good Morning America, expressing his desire to make an anti-smoking commercial.
