The Wind in the Willows is a classic of childrens literature by Kenneth Grahame. The book made Kenneth Grahames fortune, enabling him to retire from his hated bank job & retire to the country, pretty much doing what the animal characters in this book do. The story is alternately slow-moving & fast-paced, centering on three middle-aged male characters in bucolic England. It had illustrations by E H Shepard. Pan -- makes a single, otherwise anomalous, appearance. A A Milne adapted The Wind in the Willows into a play called Toad of Toad Hall. a 1983 animated version by Cosgrove Hall, which was followed by an ongoing television series done in the same style. a 1996 animated version with an all-star cast led by Michael Palin & Alan Bennett as Ratty & Mole; followed by an adaptation of The Willows in Winter. a 1996 live-action version written & directed by Terry Jones. The first album by psychedelic rock group Pink Floyd was called The Piper at the Gates of Dawn after Chapter 7 of The Wind in the Willows.
Biography: David Jason
[Top]
David White, better known as David Jason, is a highly regarded British actor, admired equally for his dramatic work as for his comedy roles. He trained as an electrician after leaving school while negotiating his way into reperatory theatre. He started his career at the same time as Michael Palin in At Last the 1948 Show & appeared in variety shows in support of stars such as Dick Emery. He appeared, most notably, as a spoof super-hero Captain Fantastic, in Do Not Adjust Your Set & co-starred with Denise Coffey in End of Part One. He was somewhat ahead of the Austin Powers & Johnny English film genre in an inventive TV series about an inept spy called The Secret Life of Edgar Briggs. Humphrey Barclay, who recruited David to Do Not Adjust Your Set partly to offset the rather intellectual style of Idle, Jones & Palin, admired Davids masterful sense of timing. This was of course in an era when British performers such as Peter Cook, Marty Feldman, Tony Hancock, Benny Hill & Kenneth Horne were all regularly demonstrating superb timing skills to humorous effect.
