Consumer DVD Review
[Top]
I bought this hoping for a DVD that offered some bellydance routines that were nice to watch & that also taught you some basic moves & choreography - this is what the blurb promised. How disappointed I was. The DVD divided into Entertaining & Educational. Entertaining has choreography set to 3 of Hossam Ramzy's pieces of music - perfectly pleasant but rather short. Educational had the same three routines, but shot from different camera angles. No commentary, explanation of steps or indeed anything new to add to the other section of the DVD. I felt a bit conned as I think I got very lttle for my money. This DVD tried to corner several markets , but only succeeded in falling between every stool going! If you want a good performance DVD you can't beat Bellydance Superstars; if you want a good instructional DVD there are plenty on the market that are miles better than this including Hilary Thacker & Jillina; if you want Hossam Ramzy's music, buy one of his many excellent CDs.
Biography: Hossam Ramzy

Hossam was born in Cairo, Egypt. His musical career began as early as the age of three when he was given his first drum, an Egyptian traditional Tabla. Hossam was encouraged by his artistic family members to master his craft & studied under leading Cairo music teachers. When he moved to Saudi Arabia he joined several Bedouin tribes which gave him a rich insight into the cultural origins of Middle Eastern music & became the inspiration for many of his later rhythmic directions. In the mid 1970 s Hossam moved to England & enjoyed great success as a Jazz drummer working with many respected Jazz musicians including Andy Sheperd & Geoff Williams. But as he began looking for new dimensions of percussive sounds, he turned back to Egyptian Drums & traditional dance rhythms of the Middle East. Hossams No# 1 hit “EDONY” that topped the dance charts worldwide back in 2001. His percussion, north african string arrangements & exciting rhythms caught the attention of Peter Gabriel & Hossam was invited to perform on PASSION & later US.
