It is also the title of a 1996 television movie featuring the same character. The programme is a significant part of British popular culture, widely recognised for its creative storytelling, use of innovative music & low-budget special effects. The show has become a cult television favourite on par with Star Trek. It has influenced generations of British genre television writers, many of whom grew up watching the series. Doctor Who ranked third in a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes of the 20th century. The list was produced by the British Film Institute in 2000 & voted on by industry professionals. A new series of Doctor Who television episodes is being produced by the BBC. It is scheduled to broadcast on BBC One in Spring 2005. History of Doctor Who Doctor Who debuted on BBC television on November 23, 1963. The programme was born out of discussions & plans that had been ongoing for a year. Background Information: The Tomb Of The Cybermen [Top] The Tomb of the Cybermen is a serial in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which originally aired in four weekly parts from September 2 to September 23, 1967. On the planet Telos, an archeological expedition uses explosives to uncover the entrance to a city, hidden in the side of a mountain. The huge metal doors are adorned with a symbol resembling the head & shoulders of a Cyberman. When a member of the expedition touches the doors, he is electrocuted to death. As the expedition looks on, stunned, a sound attracts their attention - the landing of the TARDIS. The Second Doctor, Jamie & Victoria approach the others & Captain Hopper, the expeditions pilot, holds them at gunpoint until the Doctor convinces them they had nothing to do with the death. Viner, the assistant to expedition leader Parry, accuses the Doctor of being part of a rival expedition. Parry explains that they are here to find the remains of the Cybermen, who apparently died out centuries before. Parry believes some had returned to Telos to die.
Biography: Morris Barry [Top] Morris Barry was born in Northampton & was a noticeable figure on the production side of the BBC in the 1960s & 1970s. He made his name as a producer & director on such notable productions as Angels. Compact & Z Cars ; but his most impressive credit was perhaps as producer of the highly popular dramatisation of Poldark by Winston Graham. Morris Barry had a strong connection with Doctor Who too. The Moonbase, The Tomb of the Cybermen & The Dominators. He also appeared as an actor in the Doctor Who story The Creature from the Pit in 1979, playing the scientist Tollund on the planet Chloris. His other acting credits include episodes of Are You Being Served?. Blakes Seven. The Day of the Triffids, Tales of the Unexpected, All Creatures Great & Small & Hi-de-Hi!.
