Theres Something About Mary, released in 1998 by 20th Century Fox, is a combination of romantic comedy & gross-out film directed by Bobby Farrelly & Peter Farrelly. It stars Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz & Matt Dillon. This sleeper hit was the third highest grossing movie of 1998 & it catapulted Stiller into the limelight. Although an awkward & shy high-schooler, Ted lands a prom date with his dream girl Mary, just to have it cut short by a humiliating zipper accident. Thirteen years later hes still in lovewith the one that got away, so he hires sleazy private detective Pat to track her down, only to have Pat fall for the irresistable Mary as well. Ted & Pat resort to lying, cheating & stalking in their competition for Mary & discover that theyre not the only men who will use depraved measures to be near her. The movies over-the-top & sometimes disturbing gross-out humor earned it an R rating, but made it a smash hit at the box office.

Rat Race is a 2001 comedy film directed by Jerry Zucker, producer of other films such as Airplane! & The Naked Gun series. It is a modern retelling of the 1963 film Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The story is about six teams of people going to a casino & getting sent up to the casino mogul. He tells them that they have a chance to win huge cash if they get to a locker first. The movie begins with zippy retro -style opening credits that look like a straight-out of a 60s slapstick comedy, featuring animated photos of the cast attached to herky-jerky bodies bounding around the screen. Donald Sinclair owns a hotel -cum-casino in Las Vegas. In order to entertain some of his wealthiest patrons, Sinclair must offer betting on unique competitions. To that end, he places six special tokens in his casinos slot machines. Austin Powers, played by Mike Myers, is the title character of a series of films. The films are a loose parody of many spy films of the 1960s, primarily the James Bond film franchise but also including Casino Royale, the Harry Palmer films of Michael Caine, James Coburn s Derek Flint films, Dean Martin s Matt Helm films, The Avengers & an increasingly broad range of other elements of popular culture. With the added features of bodily functions & toilet humor, the films reflect a bawdy sense of humor. The films parody the cliche of a male super-spy who is irresistibly attractive to women & makes no attempt to resist them. The satiric elements of this cliché come from Powers lack of physical beauty -- his bad teeth, for example, are made fun of in several scenes.
