Valley Of The Dolls / Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls
Background Information: Valley Of The Dolls [Top] Valley of the Dolls is the title of a best selling novel by Jacqueline Susann, published in 1966 & the Hollywood film which followed it in 1967. When first published the book became an instant success & since its original publication has sold more than 20 million copies. It was inevitable that such a success would lead to a Hollywood film. The book was the first of its genre to achieve such outstanding commercial success & led the way for other authors such as Harold Robbins & Jackie Collins to depict as fiction, the private lives of the real-life rich & famous. The subsequent film, directed by Mark Robson, received a great deal of publicity during its production. Upon release it was a commercial success, but was universally panned by critics. It was rereleased in 1969 following the murder of Sharon Tate & was once again commercially viable. In the years since its production it has come to be regarded as a camp classic. The book & film tell the story of three young women who meet when all are embarking on the beginning of their careers. Despite its title, it is not a sequel to the novel or film versions of Valley of the Dolls, but a satirical pastiche inspired by the original. It is one of two films produced by independent filmmaker Meyer for 20th Century Fox & one of three films that film critic Ebert wrote with Meyer. Ebert has written that Beyond seems more & more like a movie that got made by accident when the lunatics took over the asylum. He made a number of amateur films at the age of 15 & worked during World War II as a newsreel cameraman. Upon returning to civilian life, he became a glamour photographer & found himself working for Hugh Hefner s newly launched Playboy magazine. From here, he became a director of nudie films. His films are more ribaldry than pornography & seem unusually focused on women with large breasts. His later films are almost entirely devoted to this vision; his discoveries include Kitten Natividad & Uschi Digard. He co-wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls with film critic Roger Ebert. Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! is usually considered to be his greatest, or at least his most idiosyncratic, picture. Meyer was known for his quick wit. While participating with Roger Ebert in a panel discussion at Yale University, he was confronted by an angry woman who accused him of being nothing but a breast man. Thats only the half of it. Meyer died at his home in the Hollywood Hills, of complications of pneumonia & dementia.
