Strictly Ballroom is a 1992 film written by Baz Luhrmann & Craig Pearce & directed by Luhrmann. Strictly Ballroom tells the story of an Australian ballroom dancer, Scott Hastings. Having come from a family with a history of ballroom dancing, Scott has been training since childhood & has become very good. However, he encounters considerable resistance when he tries to dance his own steps rather than the more traditional ballroom moves. His dancing partner Liz leaves him & he searches for a new one. He eventually finds a dancing partner & love, with a woman named Fran, who takes dancing at the studio Scotts mother teaches at. At the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix, Scott & Fran overcome the odds & practically bring down the house dancing El Paso Doble, a dance learned from Frans parents. Baz Luhrmann is an Australian film director. His films are distinguished by their flamboyant & colourful theatricality. Strictly Ballroom, starring Paul Mercurio & Tara Morice. Romeo & Juliet, starring Leonardo DiCaprio & Claire Danes. Moulin Rouge!, starring Nicole Kidman & Ewan McGregor. He has also directed the opera La Bohème. Luhrmann was working on a biographical film about Alexander the Great, tentatively starring DiCaprio & Kidman, but the release of Oliver Stone s film on the same subject in 2004 eventually persuaded him to shelve the project. His current project is in development, but its subject matter remains unknown. Baz Luhrmann has listed Bollywood films as a major influence on his work, especially on Moulin Rouge! Luhrmann is also credited with a 1999 UK number one single entitled Everybodys Free. Luhrmann married Catherine Martin, the production designer on all of his films, on 26 January 1997.
