Herbert Ross, also known as Herb Ross, was a prolific film director, producer, choreographer & actor from the 1950s to the 1990s. In 1942 he had his stage debut as Third Witch with a touring company of Macbeth. In 1950 his choreography career began, with the American Ballet Theatre. His first film as a choreographer was in 1954 with Carmen Jones. In 1968 he worked with Barbara Streisand as choreographer & director of musical numbers for the film Funny Girl. In 1975 he worked on the film adaptation of the Neil Simon play The Sunshine Boys, the first of several Neil Simon play adaptations he directed. He had a huge hit with the film adaptation of Robert Harling s play Steel Magnolias, featuring Sally Field, Dolly Parton & Shirley MacLaine, in 1989. His last film was in 1995, when he produced & directed Boys on the Side, with performances from Whoopi Goldberg, Mary-Louise Parker & Drew Barrymore. William Wyler was a gallant & award-winning motion picture director. He was born in Mulhouse, France, the nephew of Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal Pictures. His family connections served him in good stead, as he became the youngest director on the Universal lot in 1925. He soon proved himself as an able craftsman & in the early 1930s, became one of Universals greatest assets, directing such solid films as The Love Trap, Hells Heroes & Tom Brown of Culver. He later signed with Samuel Goldwyn & directed such quality films as These Three, Come & Get It, Dodsworth, Dead End, Jezebel, Wuthering Heights, The Letter, The Westerner & The Little Foxes. Between 1942 & 1945, Wyler served as a major in the US Army Air Corps & directed a pair of documentaries, The Memphis Belle & the Academy Award winning The Fighting Lady.
