Biography: Deon Van Der Walt [Top] Deon van der Walt, was a South African tenor. van der Walt studied singing at the University of Stellenbosch & made his debut as Jaquino in Beethoven s Fidelio at the Kapstadt Opera House before he had graduated. Numerous scholarships & awards allowed him to continue his studies abroad. In 1981 he won the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg. His first formal engagement took him to Gelsenkirchen, then to Stuttgart & Zürich. He was invited to perform at Covent Garden in London in 1985 & there made his debut as Almaviva in Rossini ’s The Barber of Seville. Additionally he also performed at numerous international festivals, especially at the Salzburger Festspiele, where he sung Belmonte in Mozart s The Abduction from the Seraglio & Ferrando in Così fan tutte under Riccardo Muti. On video he can be seen in Handels Semele as Jupiter, singing a long, beautifully shaped Where ere You Walk, in Donizettis Linda di Chamounix with Edita Gruberova & in La Belle Helene, effortlessly soaring to the heights as Paris.

She is noted for her great tonal clarity, agility & ability to sing high notes with great power, making her an ideal Queen of Night in her early years. In recent years, she has enjoyed great success with a number of the important bel canto roles. Gruberova was born in Bratislava, now in Slovakia. She began her musical studies at Bratislava Conservatory, later continuing in Prague & Vienna. In 1968, Gruberova made her operatic debut in Bratislava as Rosina in The Barber of Seville. Her major breakthrough came two years later when she was engaged to sing the Queen of Night at the Vienna State Opera, where she sang regularly from 1972 on, making it a base for a successful international career, especially in coloratura roles. Gruberova made her debut at Glyndebourne in 1974 & at the Metropolitan Opera in 1977, both as the Queen of Night. In 1977, she also first appeared at the Salzburg Festival, as Thibault in Don Carlo, under Herbert von Karajan.
