Mussolini - The Untold Story
Consumer DVD Review [Top] This was a mini series from 1985 & is presented here on two discs in compilation form, not in its original episode form.
Its a series I thought bland at the time of first watching it, featuring far too much family background & concentrating less on the activities of the dictator. It was, however, a series that Id remember every now & then & wanted to see again, thinking that it was probably a better series than I originally gave it credit for. Having watched it on this release I was surprised by how good it actually is, more like an epic film than the TV programme it is. It boasts an impressive cast, some of whom Id forgotten was in it: George C Scott, Lee Grant, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Raul Julia, Gabriel Byrne, Robert Downey Jr, Gina Bellman, David Suchet. Although it does have a lot of family related dialogue, it is a well constructed, very well acted drama & I found it all very engrossing. It lasts 5 hours 20 minutes & I watched it in one go. Its not a 100% accurate version of what happened but it is a diverting piece of television. DVD quality is okay but there are no extra features other than scene selection. Biography: George C Scott [Top] George Campbell Scott was a film/stage actor, director & producer. He was best known for his dramatic portrayal of General George S Patton, Jr. in the Academy Award winning movie, Patton. Scott was born in Wise, Virginia. His mother died when he was only eight-years-old & he was raised by his father, an executive at Buick Motor Company. As a young man, Scott joined the US Marine Corps & was assigned to the prestigious 8th & I Barracks in Washington, D,C. In that capacity, he served as a ceremonial guard at Arlington National Cemetery & he taught English literature & radio speaking/writing at the Marine Corps Institute. Scott later complained that his duties at Arlington led to his drinking. After serving his hitch in the Marines, Scott enrolled in the University of Missouri where he majored in journalism. But he soon left college for an acting career. Scott began as a stage actor on Broadway & achieved critical acclaim portraying the prosecutor in The Andersonville Trial by Saul Levett.
