I Heart Huckabees
Background Information: I Heart Huckabees [Top] I ♥ Huckabees is a film released in 2004. It was produced & directed by David O Russell, who co-wrote it with Jeff Baena. Albert Markovski is a young man who heads the local chapter of an environmental group, the Open Spaces Coalition. Hoping to find the answers to a coincidence in his life, he contacts two existential detectives, Bernard & Vivian Jaffe. These detectives offer Albert their existential philosophy & follow him, ostensibly to help him solve the coincidence. Brad Stand is an executive at the Huckabees chain of stores. He infiltrates Open Spaces & displaces Albert as the leader. Dawn Campbell is Brads live-in girlfriend & the face & voice of Huckabees; she appears in all of the stores commercials. Bernard & Vivian introduce Albert to Tommy Corn, an obsessively anti-petroleum firefighter. Tommy is Alberts other, a kindred spirit. Tommy undermines the Jaffes & introduces Albert to Caterine Vauban, a former student of the Jaffes who has espoused an opposing philosophy. Through various twists, Brad & Dawn are also met & influenced by Bernard & Vivian. Posters Of I Heart HuckabeesEditorial DVD Review [Top] Billed as an existential comedy, I Heart Huckabees is a flawed yet endearingly audacious screwball romp that dares to ponder lifes biggest questions. Much of director David O. Russells philosophical humor is dense, talky, & impenetrable, leading critic Roger Ebert to observe that it leaves the viewer out of the loop, & suggesting that Russells screenplay is admirably bold yet frustratingly undisciplined. Russells ideas are big but his expression of them is frenetic, centering on the unlikely pairing of an environmentalist & a firefighter as they depend on existential detectives & a French nihilist to make sense of their existential crises, brought on by a two-faced chain-store executive & his spokesmodel girlfriend , & the aftermath of 9/11s terrorism. No brief description can do justice to Russells comedic conceit; youll either be annoyed & mystified or elated & delighted by this wacky primer for coping with 21st century lunacy. Deserving of its mixed reviews, I Heart Huckabees is an audacious mess, like life itself, & accepting that is the key to enjoying both.
Biography: Dustin Hoffman [Top] Dustin Lee Hoffman is one of the dominant American film actors of the late twentieth century. Hoffman was born in Los Angeles, California & graduated from Los Angeles High School where he was voted least likely to succeed. His first ambition was to be a concert pianist & he attended the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music. Then, with an interest in medicine, he attended Santa Monica City College for a year before dropping out due to poor grades. In an effort to bolster his grades during that year, he took an acting class because he was told nobody flunks acting. He performed at the Pasadena Playhouse for two years with fellow actor Gene Hackman. The two were also roommates for a while. Hoffman relocated to New York City where he worked a series of odd jobs including an occasional small television role. To support himself, he left acting briefly to teach. In 1960, Hoffman landed a role in an off Broadway production & followed with a walk on role in a Broadway production in 1961. He dropped out of acting again, studied with Lee Strasberg & became a dedicated method actor.
