The film won the 1995 Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival. The film Underground also has a superb soundtrack, written by Goran Bregovic. Its available as a CD on Mercury. The music is what you might call Yugo-Country, heavy on the brass & wailing voices. The words are very funny, but itll make you smile - & shed a tear - even if you dont speak a word of Serbian. The musicians are in the talented amateur category, tuning & timing are optional. Biography: Dusan Kovacevic

Dušan Kovačević is a Serbian writer, best known for his plays & movie scripts. As of 2005 he lives in Belgrade, Serbia. He graduated from a gymnasium in Novi Sad & recieved a bachelors degree in dramaturgy from the University of Belgrade. From 1973, he worked as a dramaturge at TV Beograd for five years. Since 1998, he has been a head of a theater Zvezdara teatar. In 2003 he directed his first movie, Profesionalac. Kovačevićs prolific work is well known & popular in Serbia. His dramas have also been translated into 17 languages. Lari Tompson - tragedija jedne mladosti. Most of his plays were performed in theaters, as well as used for movies.

Biography: Emir Kusturica

Emir Kusturica is a filmmaker born in Sarajevo, former Yugoslavia. With an impressive string of internationally acclaimed features, Kusturica became one of the most creative directors in cinema during the 1980s & 90s. He was educated at the distinguished FAMU Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, he began directing Yugoslav television shows before making an auspicious feature-film debut in 1981 with Do You Remember Dolly Bell?, which won the prestigious Golden Lion at that years Venice Film Festival. His sophomore film, When Father Was Away on Business, earned a Golden Palm at Cannes, five Yugoslavian Oscar equivalents & was nominated for an American Academy award for Best Foreign Film. In 1989, he earned even more accolades for Time of the Gypsies, a penetrating but magical look into gypsy culture & the exploitation of their youths. Kusturica continued to make highly regarded films into the next decade, including his American debut, the absurdist comedy Arizona Dream & the Golden Palm-winning black comedy Underground.
