Cover Girl is a 1944 musical film starring Rita Hayworth & Gene Kelly. The film, shot in Technicolor, tells the story of a chorus girl given a chance at stardom when shes offered an opportunity to be a highly-paid cover girl. The film was directed by Charles Vidor & was one of the most popular musicals of the war years. Primarily a showcase for Rita Hayworth, the film has lavish modern & 1890s costumes, eight dance routines for Hayworth & songs by Jerome Kern & Ira Gershwin, including the classic Long Ago & Far Away. Gene Kelly dances with his own reflection in one sequence, achieved using superimposition to give his double a ghost-like quality. Rita Hayworth as Rusty Parker/Maribelle Hicks. This is the third of Rita Hayworth's musicals. She is the star - boy is she the star. She dances sublimely - why oh why didnt she do more with Astaire? Her previous two, with Astaire, are wonderful but this is in colour & the director knows how to photograph her. I've been in love with Rita Hayworth since my teens & seeing her again in this DVD rekindled that feeling. So, she is superb what about Kelly? Well early days. I prefer Astaire but acknowledge Kelly's brilliance & you can see the first flowering of it here. Scenes pointing towards the greats in 'Singing in the Rain', innovation in the 'duplicate' scene where he dances with himself. Overall an interesting & enjoyable film well transferred. If you want to look at a beautiful woman , beautifully dressed, & beautifully photographed go for this. It's also good news for anyone interested in Kelly's development. The score isnt that marvellous but there is 'Long Ago & Far Away'. And it has a happy ending - who could ask for more!

Biography: Rita Hayworth
[Top]
Rita Hayworth was a famous American film star during the 1940s nicknamed The Love Goddess. First attracting attention of film producers as part of the dance team The Dancing Cansinos, she was signed first by Fox studios, then free-lanced for several years before signing with Columbia. After a name change from Rita Cansino to Rita Hayworth & painful electrolysis to raise her hairline, Rita made a splash as part of the ensemble cast in Howard Hawks Only Angels Have Wings. Her other woman part in Rouben Mamoulians Blood & Sand solidified her new-found stardom. Her well-known films include Youll Never Get Rich, Gilda, The Lady from Shanghai & the 1953 remake of Sadie Thompson. Shy & reclusive in real life, Rita was the antithesis of the characters she played. She once complained famously that all the man she knew fell in love with Gilda, but woke up with her. She was married five times, including a union with Orson Welles from 1944-1948. She was also very close to frequent co-star & next door neighbor Glenn Ford. Posters Of Rita Hayworth
