The Office is a British television comedy series written & directed by Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant. It first aired on BBC Two in the United Kingdom on July 9, 2001. The series is set in Slough, England in a small branch office of the fictitious firm Wernham Hogg, a paper merchant, run by David Brent. Together with his assistant, lieutenant in the Territorial Army & Top Trumps expert, Gareth Keenan, Brent manages the office in a manner intended to be familiar to corporate workers. While Brent tries to emulate his friend & mentor, salesman Chris Finchy Finch, Brent tries to be his employees best friend & tyrant to equal degrees. Other denizens of the office include the unassuming Tim Cantebury, whose relationship with bored receptionist Dawn Tinsley forms a major focus of the series, in spite of her engagement to warehouse worker Lee. verbal gaffes, accidental racism, sexism & other forms of discrimination & those of his minion, Gareth. There is no laugh track & it is designed to resemble a fly-on-the-wall documentary, largely because of the originally low budget.
