Funeral in Berlin is a novel by Len Deighton, probably the best of the so-called Harry Palmer spy novels. It is also a film that follows up on the characters in The Ipcress File. The third film -- Billion Dollar Brain -- became a bit silly in its approach. Michael Caine returned to his Harry Palmer role in Bullet to Beijing & Midnight in St. Petersburg. The subject matter - arranging the defection of a Soviet scientist - is  , but the characters -- Johnny Vulkan, Colonel Stok -- remain memorable.

Guy Hamilton was a noted film director. The Adventure Begins & Force 10 from Navarone. Hamilton was orignially chosen to direct Superman in 1978, but due to tax reasons he was only allowed to be in England for thirty days, where production had moved at the last minute.
