Background Information: A Place In The Sun [Top] A Place in the Sun is a 1951 film which tells the story of a young man who is entangled with two women who work for his uncles factory. It stars Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters, Anne Revere, Keefe Brasselle & Raymond Burr. The movie was adapted by Harry Brown & Michael Wilson from the novel An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser & the adapted play by Patrick Kearney. It was directed by George Stevens. It won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Black-and-White, Best Costume Design, Black-and-White, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture & Best Writing, Screenplay. It was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role & Best Picture. The film has been deemed culturally significant by the United States Library of Congress & selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. A Place in the Sun was originally based upon an actual murder case. In 1906 Chester Gillette was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend, Grace Brown, at Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. Born in Oakland, California, Stevens broke into the movie business as a cameraman, working on many Laurel & Hardy shorts. His first feature film was The Cohens & Kellys in Hollywood in 1933. In 1934 he got his first directing job, the slapstick Kentucky Kernels. His big break came when he directed Katharine Hepburn in Alice Adams in 1935. He went on in the late 1930s to direct several Ginger Rogers & Fred Astaire movies, not only with the two actors together, but on their own. Following World War II, in which he photographed the graphic scenes at the Dachau concentration camp, his films became more dramatic. I Remember Mama in 1948 was the last movie with comic scenes that he made. He was responsible for such classic films as A Place in the Sun, Shane, The Diary of Anne Frank, Giant & The Greatest Story Ever Told.
