Background Information: About A Boy [Top] About a Boy is a 1998 novel by British writer Nick Hornby. It was widely acclaimed for accurately rendering the thoughts & feelings of twelve year-old Marcus, who feels displaced & lonely in several ways. Looking for a friend - a real friend - he thinks he has found one in 36 year-old Will Freeman & subsequently sets out to make all sorts of plans & schemes revolving around Will. In the end - less than a year later - both Marcus & Will have matured, each in their own particular way. Marcus, who was originally looking for a stepfather, has realized that it could never be Will, but that life goes on & that it may bring pleasant surprises any moment; & Will has realized that you can live a carefree life, bring joy to others & be happy yourself at the same time. The root of all the trouble is a classic dysfunctional family of the 1990s. About a Boy was filmed in 2002 by Chris Weitz & Paul Weitz starring Nicholas Hoult as Marcus, Hugh Grant as Will & Rachel Weisz as Rachel. Background Information: Notting Hill [Top] Notting Hill is a romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant & Julia Roberts, set in the Notting Hill district of London. The screenplay was written by Richard Curtis & directed by Roger Michell. Supporting actors included Hugh Bonneville, Emma Chambers, Rhys Ifans, Tim McInnery & Gina McKee. William Thacker runs a bookshop in Notting Hill, London. Witty, cultivated & handsome, he hasnt coped well with his divorce & is currently sharing a flat with an eccentric Welsh wannabe artist named Spike. Thacker encounters world famous Hollywood actress Anna Scott during her trip to London when she enters his shop to buy a book. Shortly after they accidentaly collide in the street causing William to spill orange juice down both of them. He offers his flat as a place for them to get changed. Anna accepts & they retire to his digs. Right from the start their love affair seems to be doomed. Although Anna feels at home with his circle of friends, William more & more realizes that he is not cut out to be a famous actresss boyfriend. He was born Hugh John Mungo Grant in London, England & tends to play the archetypal Englishman & is of Scottish ancestry. After attending Latymer Upper School for boys, Grant studied English at New College, Oxford. He made his film debut in 1982 with Oxford-financed Privileged. Television came later, in 1985. One of his first major film roles was in The Remains of the Day & he became simultaneously known as the partner of actress Elizabeth Hurley, but it was Four Weddings & a Funeral which turned him into a major star. Not long after gaining the starring role in Sense & Sensibility in 1995, Grant was arrested near Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, having been caught having oral_sex with an Afro-American prostitute in a car. A public apology helped win back public support, but the break-up with Hurley came soon afterwards -- though they later got back together for a short time.
