Twilight Zone - Series 3
Background Information: Twilight Zone [Top] The Twilight Zone was a television series created by its narrator & host Rod Serling. Each episode was an individual fantasy or science fiction story, often concluding with an eerie or unexpected twist. A popular success, it introduced many Americans to serious science fiction ideas. It also provided a way for its writers to make often acute social comment in a way which would not have been possible in Cold War America outside of the sci-fi genre. Its episodes often dwelt on issues surrounding nuclear war & the mass hysteria of crowds. Many episodes, retain their resonance today. Underlying most stories was a central allegory, parable, or fable that reflected the story characters moral or philosphical choices. Writers for The Twilight Zone included leading science fiction writers such as Charles Beaumont, Richard Matheson, William F Nolan, George Clayton Johnson, Harlan Ellison & Ray Bradbury & it dramatized stories by other writers including Ambrose Bierce, Jerome Bixby & Damon Knight. His trademark was physical comedy while keeping a deadpan expression on his face at all times, which earned him the nickname of The Great Stone Face. Like his contemporaries, he came from vaudeville. His godfather was Harry Houdini & Keaton himself credited Houdini with dubbing him Buster after seeing him, aged three, tumble down a flight of stairs without injury. Keaton was born in the town of Piqua, Kansas. His mother & father, Myra & Joe Keaton, were paid performers of a travelling medicine show & Myra happened to go into labor in Pique. Buster was born in a boarding house that was later destroyed by a tornado. Currently on this site is a memorial plaque & nearby is a small power plant than maintains a one-room Keaton museum. Keaton grew up in the world of vaudeville, performing with his parents from the age of three. The act consisted of a saxophone performance by Myra & an act between Joe & Buster where Joe tried to show the audience how to raise a small child.
