Biography: Edmund OBrien [Top] Edmond OBrien was an American film actor. Born in New York, New York, OBrien made his film debut in 1938 & gradually built a career as a highly regarded supporting actor. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Barefoot Contessa & was also nominated for his role in Seven Days in May. His other notable films include White Heat, The Girl Cant Help It, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Birdman of Alcatraz, The Longest Day & The Wild Bunch. He also appeared extensively in television. He died in Inglewood, California of Alzheimers Disease. Edmond OBrien has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for his contribution to motion pictures at 1719 Vine Street & television at 6523 Hollywood Boulevard. Preston appeared in many Hollywood films, but is probably best remembered as Professor Harold Hill in Meredith Willson s musical, The Music Man, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical in 1958. In 1962, he starred in the film version. Although he was not a singer, he appeared in several other film musicals, notably Mame in 1974 & Victor/Victoria, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1982. His last major film role was in 1984 s The Last Starfighter.
