The West Wing - Series 6
Background Information: The West Wing [Top] The West Wing is an American television serial drama created by Aaron Sorkin for NBC, airing since 1999. The show is set in the White House - which serves as the residence of the President & his family - during a fictional Democratic administration. The West Wing of the White House is the location of the Presidents Oval Office & the offices of most of his senior staff. The West Wing parallels the real world in many ways, yet also has several key differences. Sorkin, the shows creator, has noted in a DVD commentary track for the second season episode 18th & Potomac that he has tried to avoid tying the show to a specific period of time. Presidents since Richard Nixon do not seem to have existed in the West Wing world. Prior to President Bartlets election, the White House was occupied by Owen Lassiter, a two-term conservative Republican, who has since died & whose funeral President Bartlet attended. Lassiters administration had been preceded by that of D Wire Newman, a one-term liberal Democrat, played in a single appearance by actor James Cromwell. Weve all wondered how long President Bartlet can continue with his illness, & how the writers of the show would string out his final year in office so that it somehow never ends. Indeed, no West Wing fan wants it to end, no-one wants Martin Sheens Presidency ever to end!!!! However, the writers do such a splendid job with Series Six that you go along with whatever changes they make - & there are a few. The West Wing is evolving - the emergence of Alan Alda as a leading Republican is inspired, & episode 11, which sees him on his campaign trail is probably the best all-round West Wing episode I have seen. One thinks that with Alda & NYPD-Blue star Jimmy Smits in the show there is more than enough compensation for any change in the more familiar faces. Josh is at the forefront & so is Donna, but in wholly unexpected ways. This series is like watching election night but for 15 hours - the candidates all seem so real, & Aldas so good you wouldnt mind the White House going Republican. Who comes out on top?
