Consumer DVD Review [Top] WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT is the perfect example of a small screen release with pretensions.
Gene Hackman is Monroe Eagle Cole, a just-recently retired & immensely popular U.S. President, who decides to take up residence at his summer house in small-town Mooseport, Maine. Perhaps part of his popularity stemmed from his divorce, while still in the White House, from his grasping & infuriating wife . Cole is immediately petitioned by Mooseports city council to run for mayor. The election is only days away, & the current mayor, running unopposed, has suddenly died. Against the best advice of his long-time political advisor, Grace , Eagle accepts. After all, his ex cant force him to sell the summer cottage as part of the settlement if its his mayoral home. Anyway, unaware of Monroes decision, local Mr. Fixit & hardware store owner, Handy Harrison , also files for candidacy at the last minute. At first, hes willing to withdraw in favor of Cole, but then it becomes a testosterone-fueled, mano-a-mano contest after the latter makes a play for Handys girlfriend, Sally , whos already frustrated at the absence of a marriage proposal from Harrison after a 6-year courtship. Romanos role would have been perfect for actor Tom Hanks in his younger days. As it is, Ray is no Tom. Handys persona is simply a transplanted Ray Barone from televisions Everbody Loves Raymond, and, while this series has garnered the comedian several major awards, Romano is out of his league on the Big Screen, especially in the company of the accomplished Gene Hackman. There are several good scenes, as when Coles rejected attempt at a good night kiss from Sally after their first date is given world-wide media coverage, & when the escalating cost of Coles mayoral campaign affects his architects plans for the Presidential Library. And, overall, the escalating debacle of Monroes decision to enter the mayoral race & subsequent campaign is plausibly presented. Its hard to tell which actor, Hackman or Romano, is the films male lead. WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT is cute - perfectly suited as a Sunday night, prime time, made-for-television comedy thats ideally tailored for Romanos talent level. Left to the Small Screen, Id award at least four stars, perhaps five. But youre going to pay Big Bucks to watch the film on the Big Screen, a venue in which I can award only three. Wait for the DVD.
