Background Information: Dances With Wolves [Top] Dances with Wolves is a 1990 film which tells the story of a cavalry officer who befriends a band of Dakota Indians, sacrificing his career & ties to his own people. It stars Kevin Costner, Mary McDonnell, Graham Greene, Rodney A Grant, Floyd Red Crow Westerman, Tantoo Cardinal, Robert Pastorelli & Charles Rocket. It has been released in both a 181-minute theatrical version & a 236-minute Special Edition version for television & video. The movie was adapted by Michael Blake from his novel of the same title. It was Costner who in early 1986 when he was himself relatively unknown, encouraged Blake to turn an idea for a story into a novel. Dances With Wolves was rejected by numerous publishers but finally published in paperback in 1988. The film was directed by Costner. John Barry composed the Award-winning score, which became one of the most popular film scores of all time. Pope John Paul II once referred to it as among his favorite pieces of music. Biography: Kevin Costner [Top] Kevin Michael Costner is an American film actor & director who has often produced his own films. Born in Lynwood, California, Costner spent his teenage years & pre-actor adulthood in Orange County, California, graduating from Villa Park High School in Villa Park, California in 1973 & earning a B,A. in business from California State University, Fullerton in 1978. Costners most popular success was with the epic Dances with Wolves. He directed & starred in the film & served as one of two producers. The film was nominated for twelve Academy Awards & won seven, including two for him personally. A number of his film efforts after that success have been criticized for being too long & overly serious & for squandering financial resources. The science-fiction epics Waterworld & The Postman was both major disappointments at the box office. Costner was cast in the hit The Big Chill. He filmed several scenes which were planned as flashbacks, but they never made it to the final cut. He was the friend who committed suicide, the event around which the plot of the movie revolves.
